Commercial developer London and Continental Railways (LCR), has announced plans to open a new shopping centre, Waterloo.London based in a former Eurostar terminal.

The centre is expected to open in 2021, the 135,000 sq ft development will include 40 retail units, a mezzanine, and public spaces along a new pedestrianised street, the Waterloo Curve.

The centre will include Time Out Market London-Waterloo, a food market which will draw in the “city’s best chefs, drinks and cultural experiences” under one roof, pioneered by the famous magazine.

The market, will also work as an anchor tenant to draw in other retailers to the space. The company currently has four markets situated in Portugal and the US, with a further six planned in the future, Waterloo will be its first in the UK.

Planning consent for the scheme, brought by LCR in partnership with the Department for Transport and Network Rail, was granted by Lambeth Council in November 2016.

Adrian Lee, development director, LCR, said: “Waterloo.London will set a new benchmark for progressive retail and transport destinations in the UK. Brands will have a truly unique opportunity to tap into a market of Waterloo’s 100 million passengers, the 20 million tourists that visit the South Bank every year, and its surrounding vibrant community and growing office population.

“The future of retail will be defined by the availability of new and exciting experiences for consumers, and we’re excited to kick start this transformation by creating a destination inspired by the creative spirit of Waterloo.”

Didier Souillat, CEO of Time Out Market, added: “Waterloo.London – where almost 100 million passengers flow through every year – is a fantastic location for us. It is right at the heart of the city and the popular South Bank neighbourhood which is already attracting locals and visitors with fantastic restaurants, bars, galleries, theatres and more. We can’t wait to bring London’s outstanding and diverse culinary and cultural scene under one roof in such a great space.”
