Alex Willson succeeds Sean Toal, who led the business for six years. Toal oversaw the transition of the firm from the WHSmith high street division to TGJones

On this episode of Talking Shop, we're joined by Dan Cate, CEO and Founder of SoldThrough. Dan is a heavyweight retail executive who has spent decades steering the merchandising and digital operations of America’s most iconic retail institutions, from Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale’s to Century 21 and Lord & Taylor. Today, through his platform SoldThrough, Dan helps international fashion brands cross the Atlantic and crack the notoriously brutal U.S. retail landscape. We break down his journey from the shop floor to the C-suite, the operational indicators that prove a brand is truly ready for international expansion, and how to navigate a fragmented American market without destroying your margins. We also discuss how to balance localised inventory with central efficiency, and the one non-negotiable metric that tells you a product has found genuine market fit.

Modella Capital has announced the appointment of Alex Willson as the new chief executive of TGJones, effective from 2 March 2026.

Willson joins the stationer from Hobbycraft, another company within the Modella portfolio, where he served as chief executive. He previously held senior roles at Samsonite and Woolworths.

Willson succeeds Sean Toal, who led the business for six years. Toal oversaw the transition of the firm from the WHSmith high street division to TGJones.

News of this leadership change comes after Toal informed the owners of his decision to resign in December, following the establishment of TGJones as an independent brand due to its formal separation from WHSmith.

Joe Price, managing director of Modella Capital, said: “I am delighted that Alex will be CEO of TGJones. He has been a great success at Hobbycraft, and we look forward to him building on the foundations established at TGJones by Sean and his team. TGJones is a business Modella is proud to own and one which we believe has great potential.

“I would like to thank Sean for his work at TGJones. He has played a critical role in setting a direction for the business as an independent brand. We are very grateful for his contribution and extend our best wishes for the future.”
