Go Outdoors has revealed its York flagship store has completed £1m in sales as it celebrates its first anniversary.

The store, which opened on 7 September 2024, celebrated its anniversary with a launch event attended by brand ambassador Helen Skelton.

The 125,000 sq ft outlet, located at Foss Islands Retail Park, has become the brand’s best-performing store and the largest outdoor retail site in Europe.

It has attracted more than 500,000 visitors in its first year and created 72 jobs in the city, according to the company.

The store sells products from more than 380 brands, including Rab, Adidas Terrex, Oakley and OEX.

It also houses the largest Yeti, Weber and Stanley stores in Europe, the “most extensive” Garmin outlet in the UK, the country’s first Jessops discovery store and the only Dometic shop-in-shop concept nationwide.

As part of its community engagement, the York store has hosted a number of events, including hiking and running clubs and a Cadac Domestic showcase with demonstrations and activities.

The site has been named a “Game Changer” and won the Retail Week award for Best New Stores – Large. It was also the fastest Go Outdoors store to reach £1m in sales.

Carl Harris, associate director of retail at Go Outdoors, said: “Watching the York store thrive over the past year has been incredible. Not only have we created 72 jobs in York, but we have also been visited over 500,000 times by customers – over three-and-a-half times more than any other Go Outdoors store in the same time period.

“Since opening in August last year, we’ve had the pleasure of welcoming thousands of  customers, and have thoroughly enjoyed helping each and every one of them find the best outdoor gear for their adventures. Our award is a testament to the hard work of our team in creating a game-changing outdoor retail experience, and I am extremely proud of our ‘excellent’ Trustpilot rating of 4.8, too.”

He added: “The team often hears from customers how they love coming to the store and making a day of it, stopping by our wonderful in-store cafe and restaurant whilst here. It’s this kind of feedback that motivates us, and we look forward to continuing on our journey to help inspire and equip the people of York and beyond for life outdoors.”
