On this episode of Talking Shop I am joined by Zipline CEO and co-founder Melissa Wong. We discuss how Melissa’s 10 years’ of frontline experience informed her approach to building a SaaS company, the recurring operational frustrations that most head offices still underestimate, and why she believes technology should be designed with the store associate as the primary user. We also explore current trends in store execution and how retailers can bridge the gap between corporate strategy and the shop floor.

Matalan has announced the appointment of ex-N Brown chief executive Sarah Welsh as its new chief product, brand and commercial officer.

Welsh brings 30 years of retail experience and has been N-Brown’s CEO for five years. During her tenure she was credited for transforming the group’s traditional catalogue offer to a more digital footing.

Prior to that, she also worked for 17 years at Oasis Fashion, where she began as a senior buyer and eventually rose to the position of managing director.

Additionally, Welsh held senior buying roles at Miss Selfridge and River Island, after starting her retail career in Laura Ashley as an assistant floor manager.

In her new role, Welsh will be responsible for putting customers at “the heart of Matalan’s proposition as it looks to grow its market share and appeal to a broader audience”.

Welsh said: “I am delighted to be joining Matalan on Monday in the newly created role of chief product, brand and commercial officer. I look forward to working alongside the brilliant executive team and supporting the continued evolution of the Product and Brand Strategy whilst developing the great talent in my team. Thank you to the board and to Karl-Heinz Holland for the opportunity, can’t wait to start.”
