Nearly 15,000 retail jobs lost in 2023
At the current pace the total number of job losses and store closures will not reach the levels of 2022 where 151,474 jobs were lost and 17,145 stores were closed
Nearly 15,000 retail jobs have been lost since the start of the year, according to new data from the Centre for Retail Research.
It found that 14,874 jobs have been lost as a result of either administration or cost cutting because of the cost of living crisis.
Over 11,000 jobs have been lost as part of cost cutting measures by big retailers such as Sainsbury’s and Asda.
Wilko announced last week that it would cut 400 jobs while New Look planned to cut 500 jobs at one of its distribution centres.
Around 3,000 jobs were lost as a result of administration. Retailers such as Paperchase and Tile Giant went into administration causing a number of redundancies.
Alongside the job losses, 675 retail stores have closed since the start of the year.
Around 350 of these were due to administration and around 320 of these were due to major retailers closing stores to cut costs.
