On this episode of Talking Shop I am joined by Zipline CEO and co-founder Melissa Wong. We discuss how Melissa’s 10 years’ of frontline experience informed her approach to building a SaaS company, the recurring operational frustrations that most head offices still underestimate, and why she believes technology should be designed with the store associate as the primary user. We also explore current trends in store execution and how retailers can bridge the gap between corporate strategy and the shop floor.

Harrods has announced plans to remove all plastic carrier bags from across its stores from next month.

The announcement forms part of Harrods’ wider plastic reduction strategy.

The luxury department store said the bags would be replaced with a sustainably-sourced paper carrier bag made from 40 per cent recycled materials, including different forms of recycled paper.

It added that all parts of the new sustainable bags, including the handles, are made from paper, meaning they’re 100% recyclable.

Harrods also said it was aiming to cut its consumption of carrier bags by 50% from pre-pandemic levels.

Other aspects of the strategy includes removing all plastic packaging from outbound distribution, which means online delivery for customers that are free of plastic packaging.

Michael Ward, Harrods managing director, said: “We are determined to overhaul the way bags are handed out across the store and are challenging customers to join us in reducing waste by using as few bags as possible.

“As proud as we are to see customers leaving our store with the Harrods green bag, going forward we want to see as few of them as possible.”
