On this episode of Talking Shop, we're joined by Dan Cate, CEO and Founder of SoldThrough. Dan is a heavyweight retail executive who has spent decades steering the merchandising and digital operations of America’s most iconic retail institutions, from Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale’s to Century 21 and Lord & Taylor. Today, through his platform SoldThrough, Dan helps international fashion brands cross the Atlantic and crack the notoriously brutal U.S. retail landscape. We break down his journey from the shop floor to the C-suite, the operational indicators that prove a brand is truly ready for international expansion, and how to navigate a fragmented American market without destroying your margins. We also discuss how to balance localised inventory with central efficiency, and the one non-negotiable metric that tells you a product has found genuine market fit.

Fashion retailer River Island has opened a new flagship store in Grovesnor Shopping Northampton.

The announcement comes from LGIM Real Assets (Legal and General), which revealed that the new unit will operate over 11,000 sq ft, with two trading levels of space.

Following the centre’s refurbishment in 2015, this development will mean that 95% of the units are now trading. The retailer said the opening will be a “welcome addition” to the 260 River Island stores currently operating across the UK and Ireland, as well as internationally across  Asia, the Middle East and Europe.

James Whitehill, a senior fund manager at LGIM retail assets, said: “River Island is a household name and one of the most popular, exciting, relevant and well-known high street brands. The fact it will be operating across two floors in a central location in the mall will really add to the shopping experience at Grosvenor Shopping Northampton.”

A River Island representative added: “The new flagship River Island store will provide a fantastic fashion experience for visitors to Northampton. This latest opening is part of River Island’s plans to have a presence in the best locations, at the best retail and leisure schemes, and Grosvenor Shopping Northampton undoubtedly falls into that category.

“We’re keen to continue to innovate the in-store experience we provide, and are looking forward to expanding and showcasing our latest products and in-store concepts to the community ahead of winter.”
