Toy retailer The Entertainer has defied the high-street gloom and reported a 29% increase in pre-tax profits to £14.7m.
According to The Sunday Times, the profit increase was attributed to an increase in sales to £204.4m, up from £37.3m the previous.
The Entertainer was founded by husband-and-wife team Gary and Catherine Grant in 1981. It is reported that as a result of its performance the pair have taken a £2.6m dividend. The Grants also reportedly donate 10% of profits to charity.
The Entertainer currently operates 160 stores around the UK having expanded its portfolio with the £13.5m acquisition of the Early Learning Centre from Mothercare last year.
At the time Grant, said: “We are delighted to add ELC to The Entertainer family. It comes with a rich history as a much loved British brand, supporting parents and grandparents with their children’s early years’ learning, development and play.
“We will look to bring new life to the product offering whilst maintaining the high level of quality ELC is renowned for.”
