On this episode of Talking Shop I am joined by Zipline CEO and co-founder Melissa Wong. We discuss how Melissa’s 10 years’ of frontline experience informed her approach to building a SaaS company, the recurring operational frustrations that most head offices still underestimate, and why she believes technology should be designed with the store associate as the primary user. We also explore current trends in store execution and how retailers can bridge the gap between corporate strategy and the shop floor.

Aldi has announced plans to recruit 4,500 store colleagues across the UK in the run-up to Christmas.

The supermarket said the recruitment drive will cover a range of permanent roles, including store assistants, managers and cleaners, to support both festive demand and its expansion into 2026.

Aldi, which currently operates more than 1,000 UK stores, pays store assistants a starting hourly rate of £13.02 nationally and £14.35 inside the M25.

The hiring push comes as the retailer looks to open one new store each week before the end of the year, part of its longer-term aim to reach 1,500 UK sites.

Aldi confirmed its stores will close on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, as in previous years, to give colleagues time off.

Kelly Stokes, recruitment director at Aldi UK, said: “At Aldi, our goal is to make high-quality, affordable food accessible to everyone – and at Christmas, demand for that always increases. That’s why we’re bringing more colleagues into our stores, ensuring we continue to deliver the very best experience for our shoppers.”
