CDS to open three more Range sites in former Homebase locations

CDS to open three more Range sites in former Homebase locations

On this episode of Talking Shop, we're joined by Dan Cate, CEO and Founder of SoldThrough. Dan is a heavyweight retail executive who has spent decades steering the merchandising and digital operations of America’s most iconic retail institutions, from Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale’s to Century 21 and Lord & Taylor. Today, through his platform SoldThrough, Dan helps international fashion brands cross the Atlantic and crack the notoriously brutal U.S. retail landscape. We break down his journey from the shop floor to the C-suite, the operational indicators that prove a brand is truly ready for international expansion, and how to navigate a fragmented American market without destroying your margins. We also discuss how to balance localised inventory with central efficiency, and the one non-negotiable metric that tells you a product has found genuine market fit.

CDS Superstores will be opening three new The Range sites in former Homebase stores in Stroud, Leicester and Blandford Forum on 31 January.

The openings are the latest step in the group’s transformation of up to 70 ex-Homebase sites since CDS acquired them in November 2024.

According to CDS Superstores, it will open up to 10 new stores each month throughout 2025 and create some 1,600 new jobs.

The Range’s new locations will offer customers a “fresh shopping experience” by combining its product variety with Homebase’s DIY expertise – and will feature ‘Garden Centres by Homebase’.

This latest roll-out also builds on the recent rebrands of farmer Homebase locations in Pollokshaws in Glasgow, Christchurch in Bournemouth, Kings Heath in Birmingham, Newton Abbot, Felixstowe, and Blyth.

Alex Simpkin, CEO of CDS Superstores, said: “We’re fully committed to retaining the best of Homebase’s heritage while introducing the broader product range and value that customers expect from us as The Range.

“While those Homebase stores acquired by CDS will continue to trade as they are during the transition period, we’re focused on ensuring a seamless transfer of these locations into our new store format, with nine launches now confirmed for this month already.”

He added: “We’re also eager to help consumers nationwide by investing in the Homebase brand with the relaunch of www.homebase.co.uk and expect to have this platform live to support families in all of their home improvement endeavours very soon.”
