Majestic eyes 125 new store locations

On this episode of Talking Shop, we're joined by Dan Cate, CEO and Founder of SoldThrough. Dan is a heavyweight retail executive who has spent decades steering the merchandising and digital operations of America’s most iconic retail institutions, from Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale’s to Century 21 and Lord & Taylor. Today, through his platform SoldThrough, Dan helps international fashion brands cross the Atlantic and crack the notoriously brutal U.S. retail landscape. We break down his journey from the shop floor to the C-suite, the operational indicators that prove a brand is truly ready for international expansion, and how to navigate a fragmented American market without destroying your margins. We also discuss how to balance localised inventory with central efficiency, and the one non-negotiable metric that tells you a product has found genuine market fit.

Majestic Wine has revealed that it has identified 125 locations for potential new stores across England, Scotland, Wales and the Channel Islands.

It has found almost 30 locations in Central London where it believes it could launch smaller format sites, following the success of its ‘mini Majestic’ concepts in Harpenden, Crouch End and Marlow.

The brand has also earmarked 14 areas within the M25, 13 locations in the Midlands, seven in the North of England and Scotland, and three in Wales.

Majestic is also considering opening a debut store in Guernsey, two months after launching its first Channel Islands store in Jersey.

Overall, the brand has stated that it has the headroom to open about 50 new stores.

The company is aiming to open an average of one new store per month and is continuing to push investment into experiential bricks and mortar retail.

As a result, it has appointed Jackson Criss as its fully retained property agent to help accelerate its store expansion plans.

John Colley, Majestic Wine CEO, said: “Experiential, bricks-and-mortar retailing is at the heart of what we do at Majestic, and we are committed to opening up to one new store per month during the coming years to help us reach even more customers across the UK.

“In addition to the new stores already in our pipeline for this year, we have identified more than 100 locations across the UK and the Channel Islands that we believe would be a perfect fit for Majestic. We are excited to start serving even more communities around the country and helping thousands of new customers discover wines, beers and spirits they will love.”
