Aldi sales reach £10bn after record December

Aldi has reported a record December with UK year-on-year UK sales increasing by more than 15% during the festive season.

The Christmas spending boost pushed the cut-price supermarket chain’s full year sales over the £10bn mark for the first time since it entered the UK and Ireland market.

Christmas sales were buoyed by a surge in demand for Aldi’s premium Specially Selected products, where sales rose by over 30% during the December trading period.

Top-selling Specially Selected products included mince pies, sweetcured gammon joints and irish cream liqueur.

Matthew Barnes, chief executive officer, Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “This was our busiest-ever Christmas as millions of festive shoppers switched to Aldi from more expensive food retailers.

“Although we saw strong growth across all categories, the performance of our premium Specially Selected range in particular surpassed all expectations. This is a clear sign that shoppers knew they could indulge in Christmas treats and festive essentials at Aldi for a fraction of the price they would pay elsewhere.”

Aldi sold more than 6.8m bottles of wine, champagne and Prosecco during December – equivalent to over 200,000 bottles per day. It also sold over 4m mince pies and more than 100m packs of vegetables.

Aldi added 76 new stores to its estate in 2017, bringing the total portfolio to 762, as part of plans to open its 1,000th UK store by 2022.
